Power, Politics, Predictions: Indonesian Presidential Election 2019

13 March 2019

On 17 April, Indonesians will vote for a new President. It will also see the start of parliamentary elections throughout the archipelago.

The core questions facing Indonesia include:

  • Who will win the Presidential election and what will it mean for Indonesia, Australia and the region?
  • Is “hard-right Islam” taking hold in Indonesia, or is it simply a case of Indonesians generally becoming more embracing of their religion?
  • For the 90 million Indonesians aged 30 or under, the economic outlook is critical in terms of jobs and opportunities. What is next for the economy?

To help answer some of these questions, Future Directions International (FDI) has joined forces with the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) and Indonesia Institute (ii) to present a free public forum in Perth on Monday, 18 March 2019.

AIYA is a non‐government, youth-led organisation which aims to better connect young Indonesians and Australians to each other and to Australia-Indonesia related opportunities. The ii is a Western Australia-based NGO which aims to operate as the peak body for independent insight and engagement into Indonesian-Australian relations.
