The title of his address is The Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) Inc: History, Aims, Goals and Future Directions
Much of Australia’s external focus has centred on the Pacific, Southeast and Eastern Asia. With its developing wealth, increasing population, evolving trade and shipping capabilities and expanding geographic, political and security significance, however, the Indian Ocean and its littoral states will play an increasingly important role in Australia’s future.
Dennis Rumley is currently Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Western
Australia. He gained a Ph D in political geography at the University of British
Columbia in 1975 and taught at the University of Western Australia until 2007, apart
from 1991-3, when he was Professor of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo.
He has been an editorial board member of various international journals and has
published widely in many areas of political geography and international relations,
including electoral geography, local government, federalism, Australia’s regional
relations, geopolitics, India-Australia relations and the Indian Ocean Region. He is
currently Chairperson of the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) Inc
