Future Directions International participated in the second 1.5 Track Defence Strategic Dialogue between Australia and India, held in New Delhi on 17 October by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), in partnership with the Australian Department of Defence.
This year’s Dialogue follows on from the inaugural 1.5 Track Dialogue held in Perth last year by Future Directions International and the Department of Defence. The Dialogue is a form of regular contact between senior representatives from India and Australia. It brings together senior officials from both countries and facilitates a greater understanding of strategic interests.
The theme of this year’s Dialogue was “Emerging Strategic Equations in the Asia-Pacific”. Participants examined the regional security architecture; implications of the US “rebalancing” Policy; prospects for IOR-ARC; re-imagining the region as “Asia-Pacific” or “Indo-Pacific”; non-traditional security challenges (including environmental, food and water); and, the emerging regional defence outlook. Discussions concluded by looking at “India-Australia Dialogue: The Way Forward” and looking ahead to the third iteration of the Dialogue in Australia next year.
