Research

Future Directions International (FDI) has developed a rigorous and comprehensive research methodology which guides our work on landmark studies and current intelligence.

FDI’s research methodology provides a mechanism for defining research priorities in support of a long-term and strategic national agenda. The concept of the research matrix is to foster an integrated, mutually reinforcing program of ongoing current intelligence work and landmark studies, which feeds into an overarching “Grand Strategy” for Australia’s future. In addition to the matrix framework FDI considers other characteristics appropriate to the scope of the research being undertaken.

FDI’s research is broad ranging and high-level, and conceived in a matrix focusing on two sets of variables.

Key Strategic Themes identifies the strategic focus which allows Australia to move toward a prosperous, strong and sustainable future. These themes are not intended to be mutually exclusive and research projects often extend across strategic themes. They include:

• Rôle of Australia within the Region and Internationally
• Australia’s Long Term Sovereign Management
• Australia’s Future Skill Set
• Australian Societal Characteristics
• Areas of National Endeavour

The second set of variables are Areas of National Endeavour. They are defined as those areas critical to Australia’s future and are the key components in maintaining a sovereign, secure and prosperous nation. They include:

• Economy
• Population
• Security
• Energy & Resources
• Identity

This comprehensive research framework allows FDI to contextually examine Australia’s strategic requirements and factors affecting national prosperity. The research framework has the approval of FDI’s Research Committee and has proven to be an invaluable approach in previous studies.
