The role of science, technology and innovation in solving global food crises

The fifth workshop series, hosted by Future Directions International’s Global Food and Water Crises Research Programme, examined the role of science, technology and innovation in averting any future food crises. In November 2011, meetings took place in Sydney, Canberra and Perth.
The meetings sought to answer the following question:
“What role can Science, Technology and Innovation play in increasing food yields and overcoming food shortages or oversupply?“

India wishes to build and strengthen its global image, commensurate with its size, population and the strength of its economy. It espouses the ideals of democracy, secularism and peaceful co-existence. These aspirations, however, are challenged by a range of factors: a large population; ethnic, religious and federal-state differences; food, water and energy security concerns; and the realisation that it may face a challenging China and an unstable, nuclear-armed Pakistan. Yet, to sustain its current growth and achieve its great power ambitions, India sees the Indian Ocean Region as critical to achieving its national interests.

Strategic Objectives of the United States in the Indian Ocean Region

As the world’s sole superpower, the United States has a wide range of varied interests spread across the Indian Ocean region. In the years to 2020, it will strive to maintain its position of strategic pre-eminence in the face of the challenges posed by its currently straitened economic circumstances. It will also look to work as closely and co-operatively as possible with key regional partners, such as Australia, India and Indonesia, while keeping relations with China on an even keel.
