A Decade of Charting Australia's Future Direction
Date: 1 March 2010

2010 marks the tenth Anniversary of Future Directions International (FDI), a Perth-based independent centre for the strategic analysis of Australia’s global interests, which has had an ongoing influence in shaping public discussion and government policy.

Launched in 2000 by the then former Governor of Western Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery AC AO (Mil) CVO MC (Retd), FDI has since grown over the decade to become a respected research institute.

‘Having FDI based in Perth is important in reminding the rest of the country of the economic and strategic importance of Western Australia and of the strategic analytical capabilities located on this side of the country’, Major General Jeffery said.

FDI’s research presently focuses on energy security, developments in the Indian Ocean region and future directions and opportunities for Northern Australia.  A fourth important research area is in defining Australia’s capacity in helping solve the world’s growing food and water crises.

‘The work that FDI continues to produce in these four research areas is first-rate and is vitally important in contributing to informing public debate and the decision making process’, he said.

FDI is supported by a body of Associates who are experts in their field, many of whom are in senior leadership, research and policy making positions. The Associates contribute to FDI’s output of strategic papers and assessments.

Since its inception, FDI has prided itself on delivering independent assessments on major issues confronting Australia and how they might be resolved.

‘I would like to thank everyone involved with FDI since its inception, and commend the work of the current CEO, Major General John Hartley. His team of strategic analysts and Associates, in helping chart Australia’s future direction, are also contributing quite magnificently’, Major General Jeffery said.

Since serving as Australia’s former Governor-General, Major General Jeffery continues to remain committed to promoting and advocating the strategic analytical research undertaken by FDI.
